About Me

Professor Zhou (Joe) Jiang is Head of Department (Business) at Graduate School of Business and Law, RMIT University, Australia. An incoming Associate Editor for Human Resource Management (US) (2023 - ; ABDC ranking - A*; a Financial Times 50 Journal), he currently serves as an Associate Editor for Applied Psychology: An International Review (ABDC ranking - A) and International Journal of Human Resource Management (ABDC ranking - A). He also sits on the editorial boards of Journal of Organizational Behavior (A*), Journal of Vocational Behavior (A*), Human Resource Management (A*), Human Resource Management Journal (A), and Australian Journal of Management (A). He is also co-chairing the Organizational Behavior Stream at Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) and was on the ANZAM Board of Directors as the Research Committee Chair. He has served as a lead or co-editor for journal special issues, including "Enabling a Thriving Workforce: Human Resource Management Perspectives" (Human Resource Management), "The Effects of Childhood Experiences in Adulthood: Implications for Business Activity and Research" (Journal of Business Research),  "Vocational Experiences and Quality of Life of Migrants" (Social Indicators Research), and "Thrive in Future of Work through Knowledge Management" (Knowledge Management Research & Practice).

Professor Joe Jiang is a researcher ranked in the Top 2% of scientists globally by the Stanford University (in 2021 and 2022). He was a recipient of the ANZAM Early Career Researcher Award (2016), which is to foster and recognize the research and scholarly achievements of emerging researchers who are at an early stage in an academic career. He was also a recipient of the ANZAM Best Paper Award of the Gender, Diversity, and Indigeneity Stream (2015) for a paper focussed on LGB individuals' work-related wellbeing. 

Prior to taking up his appointment at RMIT, he was an Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at Flinders University where he worked in roles of Head of Research and ERA Discipline Leader. Before that, he was a Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor at Deakin University where he also occupied the positions of Director of Master of Business Administration (MBA) (International), Director of Executive MBA (International), and Deputy Director of China Business and Economics Research Center. He also worked as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor and sat on the steering committee of Center for Work, Organization and Wellbeing in Griffith University and a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Management at Central Queensland University. 

​Joe received his PhD (October 2014) from Macquarie University where he spent 2 years and 9 months completing a thesis concerning fairness management and employee attitudes in a cross cultural context. Prior to moving to Australia, he was also educated in South Korea for an MBA in human resource management and organizational studies, and in China for a bachelor of boiengineering.

Joe has published 55 journal articles, over 92% (n = 51) of which are in
​A*/A/Q1 journals (as per ABDC ranking or JCR journal quartile) . His work has appeared in Journal of Organizational Behavior,  Journal of Vocational Behavior, Human Resource Management Journal, Applied Psychology: An International Review, Journal of Business and Psychology, International Journal of Hospitality Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Safety Research, Journal of Career Assessment, Personnel Review, Personality and Individual Differences, International Migration, International Journal of Manpower, Journal of Employment Counseling, Social Indicators Research, ​Cross Cultural Management, among others. 

In addition to serving as an editorial review board member for multiple journals, he is also a regular ad hoc reviewer for other journals such as Journal of Management Studies, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Human Resource Management Review, Personality and Individual Differences, International Journal of Manpower, Social Indicators Research, Asian Journal of Social Psychology, Career Development International, Cross Cultural & Strategic Management, Journal of Management & Organization, Australian Journal of Career Development, Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources, and ​Journal of Happiness Studies. His work has also been featured in Harvard Business Review, and cited in media such as The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and Brisbane Times. 

Joe has involved in supervising nine PhD students (five completions). He teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The courses he has taught include leadership and governance, human resource management, employment relations, organizational behavior, performance management, reward management, strategic staffing (recruitment and selection), and business research methods for PhD students.

​Research Interests

Joe has broad research interest in human resource management, organizational behavior, and applied and vocational psychology. His research is broadly related to career, work, social, and community issues. Specifically, his research interests include:

  • Work and non-work related wellbeing
  • The interplay between social, community, environment and vocational issues
  • Career- and work-related wellbeing of minority groups (e.g., migrants, refugees, and LGBTQIA+ individuals)
  • Workplace justice, leadership, and employee attitudes/behaviors
